Different Methods Of Repairing A Broken Windshield

Blog

Your car's windshield protects you from wind and debris on the road and is also a safety feature in case of an accident.

But what happens if you get into an accident and break your windshield?

The law requires you to repair your windshield immediately. Contact an auto glass repair company to assess and repair or replace your windshield. The experts will give you customized solutions depending on the windshield damage.

Here are three methods to repair your windshield.

Windshield Patch

A windshield patch is a great DIY option to hold your windshield together before you access professional repair services. Cut the patch to size and seal the crack before you visit auto glass repair professionals.

Apply the patch over the cracked area, then smooth it out and allow it to cure. Give the patch some time to harden and strengthen the affected area.

Most professionals don't use windshield patches because it is not a permanent solution to seal the cracks or strengthen your windshield.

Windshield Resin

Auto glass repair experts prefer using resin to repair minor chips and cracks on the windshield. Resin has adhesive qualities and will seal cracks perfectly. It also strengthens the cracked area and adds longevity to your windshield.

An auto glass replacement expert will inject resin into the chip or crack. They then apply heat to the area to harden the resin. Resin expands as it heats and fills the chips or cracks in the affected area. This process helps to prevent them from getting wider and strengthens your windshield.

However, the expert will recommend replacing the windshield if the damage is severe.

Replacing the Windshield

You can't use resin or a patch on cracks larger than the size of a dollar bill. Likewise, if the chip on your windshield is wider than a quarter, you can't repair it with resin.

As a basic rule, if you have repaired a chip or crack in the same spot before, it's time to replace that windshield.

Also, you can't repair a windshield if it has other chips and cracks branching off the original crack.

An auto glass repair expert will assess the extent of your windshield's crack or chip and decide whether to repair or replace it.

Here are the steps an auto glass repair expert will follow to replace your windshield.

  • Peel off the mold around the perimeter of the broken windshield.
  • Use proper tools to break the windshield from the points it's welded to your vehicle.
  • Remove the glass
  • Prime the frame to hold the new windshield
  • Place the new windshield and allow it to set

Depending on the manufacturer's instructions, you might have to let the windshield set for a few hours before you can drive off.
